Safety-Kleen Corp. (1301 Gervais St., No. 300, Columbia, SC 29201; Tel: 803/933-4200, Fax: 803/933-4345) lost its federal appeals court bid to continue operating a landfill near Lake Marion while it challenges state closure of the operation. The company is the nation's largest hazardous waste handler.

The ruling by the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, poses a potentially huge financial blow to Safety-Kleen in bankruptcy protection and a major victory for environmentalists in their long efforts to close the site.
