Thoroughbred Racing has a Glorious Past in Winnipeg and so does its Future
Harvey Warner runs Westwood Service on Portage Avenue, a happy motoring business he has nurtured for 25 years.
The same Harvey Warner is president of Assiniboia Downs, another business, he is nurturing.
Two accomplishments. The same man.
For the past five years Warner has led a turnaround of the historic thoroughbred race track, which is a part of Manitoba's cultural history.
Thoroughbred racing, like all businesses, has seen its ups and downs in Manitoba but has always survived. With the advent of wide spread gaming casinos the sport waned. By 1993 bankruptcy was imminent and the future of racing was bleak for one of Manitoba beloved pastimes.
That year the Downs passed from private ownership under the Wright family to become a non-profit corporation. The track's fortunes started to climb under Warner's leadership and a strong volunteer board of directors.
Dr. Norman Elder, a well-known veterinarian for the horse racing set, is vice-president of the board. He is succinct in his testimonial of Warner's contribution.
