After much talk in the industry about replacing PLC systems with software solutions driven by PCs, Siemens Automation has entered the arena with WinAC.

WinAC is intended as a supplementary package to existing Siemens Simatic hardware and software, for use where control functions are required in addition to the PC operations, typically available in a process automation system.

The WinAC concept was first aired about seven years ago but the market wasn't ready for it, said Gert Rohrmann, Software Product Manager for Siemens.
