Before deciding to rebuild a paper machine, mills need to carry out a thorough economic and technical analysis. The economic analysis will determine whether the costs are worth the benefits. The technical analysis, on the other hand, depends on the paper machine that will be rebuilt and the latest available technology that can be installed on the machine.

When it comes to rebuilds, mills all too often want to increase machine speeds without realizing that the highest possible speed may not be the best solution or that rebuilds can be done on a step-by-step basis to achieve the maximum benefit. This is particularly true with gear drive rebuilds.
