BETHESDA, M D. -- A federal advisory panel unanimously recommended that two of the three strains in the current influenza vaccine be changed for next season to represent the strains now circulating in the United States and the rest of the Northern hemisphere.

At a meeting last month of the Food and Drug Administration's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, all 17 panel members agreed that the influenza A (H3N2) strain should be switched from the A/Panama/2007/99 strain that is in the current vaccine to an A/Fujian/411/2002-like virus.

The unusually early start to the influenza season in the United States, which has been described by experts as moderately severe and has caused some deaths in children, has been attributed to A/Fujian-like viruses, the predominant H3N2 subtype isolated this…
