Magna-Lab Inc., Hicksville, N.Y., is awaiting Food & Drug Administration clearance for its Magna-SL, a magnetic resonance imaging scanner that could be the forerunner of similar machines and could force other companies to produce the smaller, less expensive devices.
Magna-Lab designed the Magna-SL to scan human extremities--hands, elbows, knees, feet, ankles--that don't require the entire body to be inserted into the MRI, as is done with traditional scanners. Magna-Lab officials are promoting the Magna-SL's relatively low price, reduction of space needed for operation, elimination of claustrophobic reactions and ability to produce weight-bearing scans.
