Lighting Dimensions International returned to Dallas, where it all began, for this year's show, held November 20-22. The first LDI was held in Dallas in 1988; this year's exhibition nearly tripled the size of the original, with 7,000 attendees (22% more than LD191) checking 240 companies exhibiting in 652 booths covering 200,000 sq. ft.
Workshops covered all aspects of lighting and sound in entertainment and architecture, from lighting the monument to concert tours to automating the television studio. In-depth interviews were conducted with master designer Thomas Skelton and special effects by Bran Ferren. As always, programming at LDI reflected the nature of business in its host city. This year, attendees toured the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, experienced a pyro demonstration, did the two-step at Borrowed Money, a local cowboy bar.
The annual climax of LDI comes with the LDI Awards given for special achievement in various areas. This year's winners include:
Designer of the Year/Lighting: Willie Williams and Carol Dodds, for their outstanding integrated lighting and video design for U2's "Zoo TV" tour.
Designer of the Year/Sound: Don Worsham, for his continuing excellence in television audio, including ten years of the Grammy Awards, six seasons of the ABC-sitcom Full House and two years of MTV Music Awards.
Light Show Design of the Year: Carl Dodds, John A. Lindsell, and Tim Hannum at the Orion/Coemar booth for their utilization and selection of music, color, movement, timing, and coordination with music; and Tim Grivas at the High End Systems booh for the creative deconstruction of the usual light show and recreation of a total lighting performance and environment that moves the light show beyond traditional boundaries.
Product of the Year/Lighting: Electronic Theatre Controls for the Source Four ellipsoidal; Vari-Lite for the VL5 automated wash luminaire; and Arri for the Arrisun 40/25 luminaire.
