With the increase in wealth, personal income and financial sophistication in Puerto Rico over the past couple of decades, particularly in the 1980's, the demand for retail investment brokerage services on the island has also grown.

Brokerage houses, having penetrated the market of high-net-worth individuals fairly well, are now trying to break new ground in the island's growing middle class. Seeing that a higher proportion of local residents deposit their savings in banks than is the case stateside, brokerage houses are targeting that segment in the hopes of drawing some of that capital their way.
