Risky games

Some $7.7 billion of federal money flowed into Puerto Rico's economy last year. The federal government also guaranteed another $631 million to island banks so that they could lend money to local businesses and individuals.

That comes to a total of $8.3 billion, and probably would top $8.5 billion, if we had been able to identify every program that receives federal grants.

As we did the research for this week's front page story, we were amazed to find out how large the total actually was. Even after subtracting the $1.7 billion we pay the federal government in Social Security contributions, we are still receiving a net infusion into our …
