Manati asks Roche to pay $28 million in municipal taxes
The Puerto Rico island municipality of Manati is seeking to collect some $28 million in fees from Roche Products, alleging the firm voided its tax-exempt status by transferring operations to Roche Panama.
Roche, which is defending its position in court, has contended the transfer of operations was approved by the director of the Commonwealth Industrial Exemption Office, Sylvia Matos Pons. The firm's manager, Edward McMullan, said the municipal government is attempting to collect fees which are in violation of existing agreements.
