Increased exports and imports prepare P.R. for competition

The Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association's concerns about preparing industry for world class competition automatically pushes the island's industry towards increased import and export activity.

With import activity there isn't much of a problem. The island has lots of experience in importing, not only legally, but illegally. It was to combat contraband that the Spanish government set up ports of entry around the island.

The island imports 95% of the products it consumes and more of the products it uses as raw materials for further processing.
