A recent study of the home medical equipment market by Lewin/ICF, Washington, shows that longer home care treatment for a number of conditions could reduce society's healthcare expenditures significantly.

The study compared hospital to home therapy for three patient diagnoses where the availability of home medical equipment dramatically improved the ability to care for people at home. These diagnoses are a hip fracture, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
