Guaynabo landfill hearings to end Aug. 2

Public hearings for the proposed solid waste landfill in Guaynabo, which are being held by the Natural Resources and Environmental Committee of the House of Representatives, will be completed officially on Aug. 2.

Environmental Development Corp. (EDC), a subsidiary of Texas-based Browning Ferris Industries, proposed in May 1990 the construction a $70 million solid waste landfill in the Hato Nuevo sector of Guaynabo. However, since then EDC has been facing complaints and opposition from area residents, who claim that the facility would damage the environmental in the area.
