S.J. Bay pilots sue Ports Authority for $1M
The San Juan Bay Pilots Association has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, alleging that regulations requiring pilots to go three miles out to sea to board vessels entering the San Juan Bay endangers their personal safety and that of their boats. The pilots claim the waters outside the bay are too rough and the smaller vessels are at risk.
The pilots in charge of steering all vessels which enter and leave the San Juan Bay are licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Ports Authority and, although not Ports Authority employees, they are appointed by the agency's executive director. …
