THE DAY-OF-THE-WEEK PROBLEM

I procrastinated for several weeks before addressing the registration paperwork that came with my new Toshiba laptop. The marketing tigers at Toshiba America wanted details about my working environment, my occupational status, and my plans for enhancing corporate productivity with my T1100 Plus. I considered telling them how, in fact, their product had been put to use in our household but decided that the truth would only confuse them.

Since we already had two computers in the house--a first-generation IBM PC and a Dell System 200--it took a certain amount of intrafamilial selling to make the case for the Toshiba in the first place. …
