Flight delays are common and often develop hours before a scheduled take off due to weather or mechanical difficulties. However, until recently passengers generally learned of delays only upon arrival at the gate.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA, 800 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20591; Tel: 202/267-3462) is providing a new service effective immediately that informs the public of aviation delays using wireless devices. Travelers equipped with pagers, cell phones, or PDAs, can subscribe and obtain real-time airport status information via email.
