I am a 39-year-old female with Machado Joseph Disease. My symptoms are mild except for the severe foot cramps that can happen several times a day. The cramps distort my foot out of proportion which prevents me from walking. These cramps can sometimes last up to one hour and sometimes even longer. Is there any medication to help prevent this?

Muscle cramps and dystonia are probably more common in hereditary ataxia, particularly SCA 3 (Machado Joseph disease) than we have thought in the past. "Cramp" refers to a tightening or contraction of a muscle, while "dystonia" refers to a tightening that leads to unusual postures of the limb or joint.
