Five and a half years after invading Poland, Germany surrenders to the Allies and the Soviet Union in Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters in a Reims, France, schoolhouse May 7, 1945. V-E Day, May 8, dawns with a euphoria tempered by an awareness of the job ahead; war will rage in the Pacific for four more months.
