University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA) and Equilon Enterprises, Inc. (now Shell Oil Products US, 1100 Louisiana, Houston, TX 77002; Tel: 713/277-7000) researchers are evaluating the performance of phytoremediation in treating MtBE-contaminated groundwater at a former gas station in Houston, TX. Approximately 1,000 hybrid poplar trees were planted at the site in February 1998 across a 1.7-acre treatment area. Current field results demonstrate that significant MtBE uptake in the poplar roots has taken place and that phytohydraulic containment of the plume is possible.
