DALLAS -- Women are 50% more likely than men to drop out of their ob.gyn. residency program, Dr. Elysia Moschos reported at the annual meeting of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
There's a marked gender difference in the reasons for ob.gyn. resident attrition. Fifty-five percent of men quit their residency because they've given up on a career in ob.gyn. and are switching to another specialty. That's the case for only 28% of women who withdraw, according to Dr. Moschos of Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas.
In contrast, 48% of women who quit their ob.gyn. residency do so for family reasons, with the top two cited being spouse relocation and child care issues. Only 28% of men who leave their residency cite family considerations as the principal reason.
