Use of nonselective NSAIDs may protect against acute MI, Dr. Stephen E. Kimmel said at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
This benefit is eclipsed, however in patients also taking aspirin. The cardioprotection afforded by combined use of aspirin and a nonselective NSAID such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or diclofenac appears to be no greater than for aspirin alone, according to Dr. Kimmel of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
He presented a case-control study involving 1,102 patients aged 40-75 years admitted with a first acute MI to 1 of 36 hospitals in a five-county area during 1999-2001. A total of 4,153 randomly selected adults living in the same area served as controls.
