'Brittle' diabetes in anorexia. (Diabetes).
The combination of type 1 diabetes and anorexia nervosa has "dire consequences" in terms of excess mortality for women, reported Dr. Soren Nielsen of the University of Copenhagen and associates.
The investigators used the Danish nationwide psychiatric admission case register to identify 658 women with anorexia nervosa; they used data from two population-based studies to identify 510 women with type 1 diabetes; and they cross-checked data on psychiatric admissions with the nationwide somatic admission register to identify 23 women with concurrent diagnoses of type 1 diabetes and anorexia nervosa.
Over the 10-year follow-up period, there were 13 deaths among the 510 women with type 1 diabetes, 43 deaths among the 658 with anorexia nervosa, and 8 deaths among the 23 with both diagnoses. Type 1 diabetes was listed as the cause of death for all ...
