SAN FRANCISCO -- The natural history of genital herpes simplex virus type-1 infection is one of infrequent recurrence inmost individuals, Dr. Anna Wald reported at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
The traditional view has been that herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) is the cause of oral/labial herpes, while HSV-2 is responsible for the genital infections. But HSV-1 is increasingly being reported as a cause of genital herpes, noted Dr. Wald of the University of Washington, Seattle.
Little is known about the natural history of genital HSV-1. To shed light on the subject, Dr. Wald reviewed the records of 48 women and 29 men who presented to the university's virology research clinic with a culture-positive primary genital HSV-1 infection. ...
