"X-by-wire" technology has been under development for a number of years. Using the system, vehicle makers intend to replace the mechanical linkages within the vehicle with electronic connections. The advantages of such a system are obvious from a design standpoint. Electronic design can be modeled on a computer and tested prior to creating a prototype.

Tier-one original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), such as TRW and Delphi Automotive, in addition to European and Japanese vehicle makers, are developmg x-by-wire designs and components.

As is often the case with new technology in vehicles, both the European and Asian markets currently lead the U.S. market. …
