DENVER -- Unintentional pregnancies occurring during interferon beta-la therapy for multiple sclerosis do not appear to be at increased risk for teratogenesis or spontaneous abortion, Dr. Magnhild Sandberg-Wollheim reported.
These observations, which were based upon an analysis of 30 pregnancies occurring in participants in controlled clinical trials, are encouraging, but previous animal studies have linked interferon beta-la to an increase in spontaneous abortion. It therefore continues to be prudent medical practice to stop the drug when pregnancy is planned or occurs unintentionally the neurologist said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.
Patients and their physicians can be reassured that a 9-month drug holiday is unlikely to have a significant adverse effect in patients with this chronic disease.
