Pregnant women who are younger than age 20, are black, receive Medicaid, or lack a high school education may be at greater risk for behaviors that can harm the health of their infants, according to a 17-state survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System tracked data from state and local health departments on seven maternal and child health indicators in 1999 (MMWR 51[SS-2]:1-27, 2002).

In 1999, the percentage of women who got no prenatal care or who got late prenatal care (after the first trimester) ranged from a low of 16.1% in Maine to a high of 29.9% in Oklahoma. In all 17 states, significantly more women younger than 20 years had delayed or no ...
