Discrimination vs. Health Issues
Dr. Paula Amato confused discrimination and intolerance with health, since, to my knowledge, the anatomy physiology, and health needs of women are the same, regardless of sexual orientation ("Little Time Devoted to Lesbian Health in Ob.Gyn. Training," March 1, 2002, p. 29).
I've cared for a few lesbians in almost 20 years of practice. I provided them with the same care, compassion, and respect I afford to all my patients, something we should all try to do. I know obese women who also refuse to get exams because of negative experiences in the health care system. I also know women who are quite adept at putting obnoxious physicians in their place. We are responsible for our own care, excuses to the contrary notwithstanding.
Attempts to frame discrimination issues as health issues, however well-meaning, are only likely to irritate those of us who have tried to render care without prejudice.
