STEVE O'NEILL, WHO MANAGED four major league teams, including the Detroit Tigers to a World Series title in 1945, was among the finest defensive catchers of his day, but as the cliche goes, "he couldn't hit a lick" early in his playing career.

That didn't faze Lee Fohl, his first major league manager at Cleveland.

"When you have a catcher like Steve O'Neill, you don't care if he hits a lick," declared Fohl, who wasn't distressed even when his receiver declined to .182 for 129 games one season, a figure which even in the "deadball" era suggested rigor mortis.
