The image on the laptop screen-a cratered, black-and-white landscape covered in clusters of thick, jutting stalks-looks as if it could have been captured by one of the Mars rovers. In fact it's something much closer to home: my own scalp, as seen through the Numeric Hair Analyzer. This gadget-essentially a souped-up computer mouse that photographs individual strands of hair and magnifies them, and their various afflictions, up to 160 times-is the main attraction at the J.F. Lazartigue Hair Analysis Center in Manhattan, an intimate space where cuts and color are conspicuously absent and scalp analysis is the order of the day.
