Caroline Calvin, the creative director of Levi's, is snooping around in La Rosa, a vintage store on San Francisco's Haight Street. It's the jewelry case that interests her, and anything that's of interest to Caroline Calvin is of interest to me: She is one of the most rigorous yet whimsical self-stylists around. One of her tricks is to adopt familiar, often brash, visual statements and somehow strip them of all clanking cultural affiliations. So, although her hair is dyed pink, there's no Zandra Rhodes (or Pink) echo.
