Funny how a dress can feel like a classic from the first zip. In the spring, I tried on a V-neck frock with billowing sleeves at OG2, a tiny boutique at the scruffier end of Portobello Road. It has rarely come off since; in fact, I ordered a second one a month later for the odd laundry day. I've worn it with platforms to Hollywood dinner parties; with studded thongs to the beach; with ballet flats to the office; and with spiky heels for really big New York nights. (This winter it will pair nicely with mock-croc boots.) And all the while, I've been pressed by men, women, and teenagers for details of its pedigree and availability. For the dress looks like nothing else; no one can quite place it.
