Experts now say a column failure likely caused the cave-in of Moscow's largest waterpark, which left nearly 30 people dead and more than 100 injured.
The 5,000.square-meter dome roof of Transvaal Park, which opened in 2002, came crashing down on the facility's pool area on Feb. 14 just after 7 p.m., dumping several tons of glass and steel on the 462 people believed to be in the area under the dome. Initially, authorities said an excess buildup of snow on the roof was to blame. But no more.
"Snow is definitely not a factor," said David Orr, president of Amusement Leisure Worldwide Ltd., a waterpark industry consulting firm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, which is investigating the accident. "There were maybe 6 inches of snow on the roof. Its foundation was strong. Right now, they believe one steel column failed, causing the walls to buckle, and then the roof fell down."
