For the first time in 12 years, the American Red Cross has updated its Swimming and Water Safety Program in hopes of producing better swimmers, swim instructors and lifeguards.
The updated program streamlines the instructor training process and structures the organization's Learn to Swim programs to keep children in the courses longer, said Connie Harvey, an aquatics expert and American Red Cross spokesperson.
The Water Safety Instruction courses have been cut from 39 to 30 hours by removing redundant material and standardizing the courses more tightly.
"The typical age range for swim instructors is through college," Harvey said. "That is a very busy age group with many competing priorities. It was important for us to make certain that every minute in the classroom or in the water counts."
