Sep. 30--Bands of armed men in southern Iraq are descending daily on the ruins of history's first cities, smashing and wrecking valuable archeological material to get at artifacts for an illegal but highly profitable trade in antiquities, an Iraqi State Board of Antiquities official said Monday in Chicago.
Donny George, director of research for the board, appealed for U.S.-led coalition military forces to assign troops to guard sites of several ancient cities that he says are being systematically rifled for artifacts by armed bands of looters.
