Nov. 22--PITTSBURGH--Health officials on Friday confirmed green onions as the source of the nation's largest-ever outbreak of hepatitis A, sickening 575 people and killing three the past month in a cluster of working-class towns about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Contaminated green onions also led to hepatitis A outbreaks this fall that struck about 250 people in the Atlanta and Macon areas, plus 80 people in Knoxville, and more than a dozen in Asheville, N.C. Health officials have said those three outbreaks are almost certainly linked.
