Nov. 21--Georgia officials will not purchase 1,491 acres of Morgan County land earmarked for Ford Motor Co., which suggests the automaker isn't ready to replace its Hapeville factory just yet.
For nearly two years, the company has been searching for the ultimate site: one that's close enough to Hapeville to draw on Ford's existing work force and large enough to accommodate the automaker's major suppliers. At 128 acres, the Hapeville site is too small for such expansion plans.
Ford is a marquee-name Fortune 500 company, and the Hapeville plant has a $148.3 million annual payroll. So in terms of both prestige to the state and impact on its economy, Ford is a corporate trophy.
Ford and state economic development officials have spent considerable time on the project, coming close to cementing a deal for a Morgan County tract that's 60 miles east of Atlanta and within a mile of I-20, according to interviews and documents obtained through the Georgia Open Records Act.
But that plan has fallen through.
