Dec. 12--The U.S. government has purchased 250,000 doses of flu vaccine and will rush them to state health departments to combat shortages, federal health officials said Thursday.
The new supply will do little to alleviate a shortage prompted by fears of a particularly nasty flu sweeping the nation. Eighty-three million doses of vaccine were made this year, and nearly all are gone.
Despite the dire predictions, it is not certain that this flu season will be more deadly than others, experts said Thursday.
