Dec. 12--Federal health officials said Thursday they have bought a quarter-million more doses of influenza vaccine amid a flu outbreak now reported widespread in 24 states.
The seasonal illness struck early and severely, prompting high vaccination demand that exhausted vaccine supplies around the country.
Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said 100,000 reserve doses of adult vaccine bought from French pharmaceutical manufacturer Aventis Pasteur would be shipped to states this week. An additional 150,000 doses of the company's children's vaccine won't arrive until next month.
