Dec. 31--Anxious retailers finally had themselves a merry little Christmas. Last-minute shoppers delivered an urgently needed sales pop on Christmas Eve and the two days after Santa's visit.
They were attracted by heavy markdowns, gift cards and rosy economic forecasts.
The late surge put holiday chain-store sales back on track to grow 4 percent year-over-year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.
