The airline industry ran into more turbulence Friday, as the shaky economy and the war with Iraq continued to pummel the beleaguered sector.
United Airlines said it was eliminating 104 domestic and 20 international flights a day starting April 1, and confirmed it would lay off 3,400 more workers. It had been scheduling 1,570 flights a day.
"We saw a drop in future bookings as a result of the threat of war, and we expect this to continue with the onset of war itself," said Greg Taylor, United's senior vice president of planning.
Northwest Airlines announced it would cut about 4,900 jobs and reduce its flight schedule of 1,500 departures by 12 percent. And two carriers joined United in bankruptcy…
