MIAMI BEACH -- Prophylactic oophorectomy via outpatient laparoscopy is a safe and effective means for primary prevention of ovarian cancer in high-risk women, Dr. Richard R. Barakat said at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
Of 180 patients with a mean age of 50 who underwent prophylactic oophorectomy (P0) over a 5-year period, 52 had pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, 1.7% (3 patients) were found to have occult ovarian or tubal cancer at the time of the surgery, and another 1.7% were found to have metastatic breast cancer to the ovaries. Only one patient without cancer at the time of the surgery developed primary peritoneal cancer in the 18-month follow-up period, said Dr. Barakat of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
