Aug. 1--ACAMPO, Calif. -- When winery CEO Jeff Hansen looks across the Pacific Ocean, he sees millions of Asians who could be drinking his wine.
Some of them will have the chance because Hansen's highflying Global Wine Group is sending 16,000 cases of its flagship Jewel Collection label to top hotels across Asia. Hansen is banking on a resurgent Asian economy, continued demand for Western products and reviving interest in wine.
State wine industry leaders, some of whom will tour Asian markets this fall, hope the continent's expanding middle class will embrace California's signature drink at a time when it needs a sales boost.
"There is an awakening in Asia that I have never seen," said Hansen, chief executive of the Global Wine Group, based near Lodi. "For the first time, really, there is a sincere appreciation for wine."
