ORLANDO, Fla. _ Only eight days remain until high-school football season begins. Florida will kick off fall practice on Aug. 9.

But 26 Floridians already have given oral, non-binding commitments to colleges. They have until Feb. 2 to change their minds.

The Florida numbers pale in comparison to the rest of the country, where more than 340 already have pledged to their favorite teams.

Leading the way is the Atlantic Coast Conference as a league and Virginia as a school. The ACC has 88 commitments, the latest being TE Jose Cruz (6 feet 5, 240 pounds) of Johnstown (Pa.) Bishop McCort to UNC. Virginia has a whopping ...
