MIAMI _ With at least six starting positions changing this season on offense for the Dolphins, a little leadership has never been so necessary.
Just a couple of problems there. First, running back Ricky Williams was an offensive captain last season. Second, tight end Randy McMichael, who is dealing with personal issues stemming from his arrest in June, was the other.
Not an optimal situation for a group roundly described as "quiet" to begin with.
"We've had great experienced players over there, but we haven't had a lot of offensive vocal-type leaders," coach Dave Wannstedt said. "So I think there is a lot of opportunity over there, too."
Wannstedt went on to say that he doesn't see a problem with leadership developing on offense. Perhaps, but there is only so much a coach can say before the players have to make everything work.
In this situation, the Dolphins are faced with a daunting task. Four of the five offensive line jobs are going to change, and two of those positions are up for grabs. On a unit where communication is a must, getting that situation in order will take more than classroom work, a few practices and a couple of exhibition games.
