FORT WORTH, Texas _ Through the window of his office in the John Justin Athletic Center, TCU football coach Gary Patterson gazes over the stadium where his up-and-coming program has prospered over the past six seasons.

Amon G. Carter Stadium isn't one of the most lavish venues in college football. There are no suites, and the capacity hardly rivals that of a big-money college football power. The 76-year-old stadium hasn't seen a significant upgrade in almost five decades.

But the modest scene will eventually have to change.

Since the Bowl Championship Series was developed in 1998, wealthy college football powers have increased the gap between the haves and have-nots. The Goliaths of the college football world are spending millions on stadium projects and practice facilities to entice top recruits.

TCU is slowly pushing itself into this college football version of an arms race with a relatively modest $20 million athletic budget, and is trying to become ...
