AKRON, Ohio _ How many Indians fans truly appreciate the comeback made by Omar Vizquel from two knee operations last year?
Not enough.
Too many remember Vizquel's dismal stretch at the end of April, when the shortstop made seven errors in his first 29 games. Combined with his injury-marred 2003 season, that was enough to cause some fans to decide he was finished.
As reader Marc Matlock (East Lansing, Mich.) wrote: "Do you agree with me that Vizquel needs to retire? I love the guy but he seems a bit worn out in the field. I think he'd be a great utility guy or pinch hitter with his ability to produce in the clutch."
I think 80 percent of Omar Vizquel in his prime is still a very good player, and that's the Omar Vizquel today.
He went into the weekend hitting .363 in July. For the season, he's at .301. He leads the American League in sacrifice bunts and is 12-of-14 in stolen-base attempts. He's hitting .333 with runners in scoring position.
