WHEELING, W.Va. _ The state song calls West Virginia "almost heaven," but these country roads turned into political hell for Democrats in 2000.

George W. Bush's 6-point win stunned Democrats who thought they owned West Virginia _ and those five electoral votes would have given Al Gore the presidency, rendering the Florida recount superfluous.

That's why John Kerry made sure to squeeze in a West Virginia stop Saturday as part of his post-convention bus tour, hosting an Ohio River-side rally just a few miles from where Bush had toured a new sporting goods store two hours before.
