Jul. 28--Wary of being fleeced by crooked vendors with conflicts of interest, the city Education Department is looking to hire an outside firm to conduct "discreet" background checks.

The proposed independent inspector general would specifically snoop on food vendors to check out "allegations of impropriety," according to a request for proposals.

The department also is looking for someone to make sure that school repair crews hired by the Division of School Facilities are "qualified for the work they are doing," the request states.
