Jul. 17--Mel Katz has car pooled to work with his business partner for years, making the daily drive from Scripps Ranch to downtown San Diego and back.

Thus, the co-owner of the local Manpower Inc. franchise has occasionally found himself temporarily stranded during the day without wheels.

But no more. Whenever Katz has to jump in and drive somewhere, he borrows a nearby car.

"That's the beauty of car-sharing," said Katz. "When you need it, it's there."

Katz is a member of Seattle-based Flexcar, which keeps vehicles ready and running for people who only need access to wheels for a few hours a week.
