Jul. 12--AUGUSTA, Maine--Gov. John Baldacci is expected to pick Jack Cashman of Old Town, a top aide and former legislator with a background in the private sector, to run the state agency that coordinates the government's efforts to lure businesses to Maine.

The appointment to the Cabinet-level job, which should be announced shortly, is seen as critically important because the state's economy is shaky and Baldacci has made economic development a cornerstone of his administration.

Cashman and Lee Umphrey, Baldacci's chief spokesman, refused Friday to confirm widespread speculation that Baldacci will nominate Cashman to take over the Department of Economic and Community Development. …
